LAB: FRUIT FLIES!

are very funny folks. They like to live in cramped smelly conditions and
eat this weird type of blue food called "medium". Mr. V will give you
the hard copy version of the lab so you can complete the below pre-lab.
Next. . . go to the virtual fly lab page by clicking: FLIES
The key to this lab is only choosing ONE, I repeat, ONE of the same traits to cross. One of the flies should ALWAYS be the WILD TYPE. For example, if you want to see how eye color is passed done from parent to child chose one parent as the wild type and then pick another fly with a different eye trait only!
Create a Punnet Square to predict the outcome of your first cross and then use the website to see if your prediction was correct. An example is below for flower color!
Once you feel comfortable using the site, go back to the hard copy lab (given to you by your teacher) and follow the directions.
Some of this lab MUST be done for HW.
Finally, when complete, click on the below document and explore homebox genes. Did you ever want an arm to grow out of your head? Well. . . it might because of homebox genes!
How does Transcription Error lead to mutation? More fruit fly exploration!!!
An answer to the question: "Why are some genes expressed and not others?" the Epigenetics module on Learn.Genetics explores some of the mechanisms responsible for the differential expression of genes, and how environmental factors influence those mechanisms.
